《平凡的世界》: third Mao Dun Literature Prize

The Chinese Writers Association list places 《平凡的世界》 by 路遥 in the third Mao Dun Literature Prize, for novels of 1985–1988, published by 中国文联出版公司. I am not inventing a ceremony year.

The prize, as printed

On the Chinese Writers Association site, the page titled as a list of Mao Dun Literature Prize winners places 《平凡的世界》 and 路遥 in the third session, headed 1985–1988, and names 中国文联出版公司 as the publisher. The page I checked shows a source line for 中国作家网 dated 11 August 2023. That date belongs to the list, not to the third prize.

A pinyin reading of the author’s name is Lu Yao. That spelling is our reading aid. It is not printed as an English byline on the list. This page also does not translate the title into a published English-edition name, because no English publisher page was checked.

The setup, without the ending

Two brothers from a rural family try to change their circumstances by work and study while the economy around them starts to allow different ways of making a living. School, marriage, and the cost of leaving a village are ordinary decisions with long consequences.

The novel is long and social. I do not divide it into volumes, I do not name a later success or failure as the point of the book, and I do not claim that every chapter was checked for this page.

What I keep turning over

Labor is the book’s measure of character, but the novel also notices how little one person’s effort controls the result. A reader can respect the work without treating hardship as a moral score.

Family duty and a hope for an ordinary life pull against each other. “Ordinary” in the title is not a small ambition inside the story. It is the life the characters are trying to make possible.

If this is your kind of book

Read it if you want a realistic novel about rural China across years of change, and if you are willing to stay with daily work rather than with a puzzle or a court. It is the wrong scale if you want a short book.

The other Mao Dun guide here is 《蛙》. The published-book notes already on this site, The Little Prince and The Old Man and the Sea, check a much smaller passage. They are linked as a different shelf, not as the same kind of reading.

Where I stop

I am not stating a ceremony year. The winners list gives the session 1985–1988, not one announcement date I will treat as the prize year. I did not verify an English edition, and I do not quote the novel.

Pages used for the facts

These are existing notes on this site. They are not prize reviews, and they do not cover the same text as this guide.
