Spoiler-light: roles and introductions only; no fates are given.
Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020 and fills 23 volumes; VIZ Media publishes it in English (official page). The anime by studio ufotable covers most of it, and the final arc is being told as a film trilogy starting with Infinity Castle (2025).
Tanjiro’s group
- Tanjiro Kamado — a charcoal seller’s son with an unusually sharp nose and a stubborn kindness, even toward demons he must kill.
- Nezuko Kamado — his younger sister, turned into a demon. She does not eat people and protects humans instead, which no one thought possible. That exception drives the plot.
- Zenitsu Agatsuma — cowardly and loud while awake, frighteningly fast when he passes out.
- Inosuke Hashibira — raised in the mountains, wears a boar’s head, picks fights with everything.
The Hashira
The nine Hashira (Pillars) are the Demon Slayer Corps’ strongest swordsmen, each named after a breathing style: Water (Giyu Tomioka), Flame (Kyojuro Rengoku), Sound (Tengen Uzui), Mist (Muichiro Tokito), Love (Mitsuri Kanroji), Serpent (Obanai Iguro), Wind (Sanemi Shinazugawa), Stone (Gyomei Himejima) and Insect (Shinobu Kocho). They first appear together at Tanjiro and Nezuko’s trial, and most of them do not want Nezuko alive.
The demons
- Muzan Kibutsuji — the original demon, who can turn people into demons with his blood and hides in plain sight in Taisho-era Tokyo.
- The Twelve Kizuki — his strongest demons, split into Upper and Lower Moons. Each major arc pits the corps against one or more of them.
Where to start
Season 1 of the anime and volume 1 of the manga begin at the same place: the snowy mountain and the Kamado house. If you want to read ahead of the films, the Infinity Castle arc begins near the end of volume 16.
What ties the cast together
Gotouge’s characters share one idea: grief can turn into either a demon or a sword. Almost every demon in the series was a person who lost something and accepted Muzan’s blood to stop feeling powerless. Almost every slayer lost something too and chose to protect others instead. Tanjiro’s habit of mourning the demons he kills is the series’ way of saying the line between the two is thinner than the uniforms suggest. Once you see that, even minor demons’ flashbacks stop feeling like filler.
Breathing styles in one paragraph
Slayers fight with breathing techniques that push the body past human limits, each associated with an element or idea. Tanjiro starts with Water Breathing, taught by his teacher Sakonji Urokodaki, and later draws on a family dance tied to Sun Breathing, the original style from which the others descend. You do not need to memorize forms; what matters is that each Hashira’s style says something about their personality.
Arc guide for anime viewers

- Hashira Training (season 4) — the bridge to the finale.
- Infinity Castle (film trilogy from 2025) — the final assault.
Who to follow if you are new
Start with the four leads and add one Hashira per arc. That is how the series introduces them, and it keeps a large cast manageable. Our pages on Muichiro and Mitsuri go deeper on two of the Pillars.

Our take
What separates Demon Slayer from many battle series is its tenderness. The fights are spectacular, but the scenes people remember are often quieter: a demon’s last memory, a sibling’s promise, a Hashira admitting fear. If you are new, do not judge the cast by its loudest members in the first episodes. The series rewards patience by giving almost everyone a moment where the joke turns into something real.
