Book Notes

Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira: who she is in Demon Slayer

A note · Koyoharu Gotouge

Mitsuri Kanroji is Demon Slayer's Love Hashira, whose unusual strength and whip-thin sword make her one of the Pillars. Her backstory, her fighting style, and where she gets her big moments.

Spoiler-light: her backstory and her role in the Swordsmith Village arc are summarized. Her final arc is not described.

The short answer

Mitsuri Kanroji is one of the nine Hashira in Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer (manga 2016–2020, 23 volumes; VIZ Media). She uses Love Breathing, a style she developed from Flame Breathing while training under Kyojuro Rengoku. Her sword is extremely thin and bends like a whip, which only works because of her unusual body.

Her backstory, in brief

Mitsuri was born with muscles eight times denser than normal and an appetite to match. As a teenager she hid both, dyed her pink-and-green hair black, and acted small so that a marriage prospect would not reject her. It did not make her happy. Joining the Demon Slayer Corps was her way of finding a place where her strength would be wanted, and, she hoped, someone who would love her without edits.

How she plays on the page

She is warm, easily flustered and openly affectionate toward almost everyone, which can make her look like comic relief. Gotouge uses that expectation. In the Swordsmith Village arc (anime season 3, 2023), she is the Hashira who holds the line against an Upper Moon while Tanjiro’s group tries to end the fight, and her speed and reach finally get room to show.

A note on her design

Mitsuri’s uniform and design draw a lot of fan art and some criticism; the series itself frames her as someone who chose to stop hiding. If you want to judge her as a character rather than a design, read volumes 12–15 of the manga.

Love Breathing, explained without the jokes

The name invites laughs, and the series sometimes plays along, but the technique is serious. Love Breathing relies on flexibility and speed, and Mitsuri’s whip-like sword lets her attack from angles a normal blade cannot reach. The style is an expression of the thing she was once ashamed of: a body that does not fit the expected shape. She did not overcome her strength; she built a way of fighting around it.

What her story says about belonging

Mitsuri’s backstory is one of the clearest in the series about the cost of shrinking yourself to be accepted. When she hid her hair, her appetite and her strength, she got a match and lost herself. When she stopped hiding, she found the Demon Slayer Corps, where those same traits made her a Pillar. The manga does not present that as a fairy tale; the corps is dangerous and the work is grim. But it is the one place where nobody asks her to be less.

Her relationships

  • Kyojuro Rengoku — her former teacher; Love Breathing grew out of his Flame Breathing.
  • Obanai Iguro — the Serpent Hashira, whose quiet devotion to her is one of the series’ gentlest threads.
  • Tanjiro and his friends — she treats them with open warmth, which contrasts with most Hashira’s suspicion of Nezuko.

Reading and watching guide

  • Manga: introduced at the Hashira trial (around volume 6); her big arc is Swordsmith Village, volumes 12–15.
  • Anime: season 3 (2023) is her showcase; season 4, Hashira Training, includes a training sequence with her.
  • Films: she appears in the Infinity Castle trilogy. We do not describe events there.

FAQ

Why is Mitsuri’s hair pink and green? In the story, it changed color after she ate a large amount of a particular sakura-flavored rice cake as a child, which is the kind of gentle absurdity Gotouge uses to lighten heavy arcs.

Is Mitsuri strong? Yes. She is a Hashira, and her muscle density gives her strength far beyond her build.

Who trained Mitsuri? Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira.

Is she in love with someone? The series hints at a mutual affection with Obanai Iguro. How it develops is a late-manga spoiler.

Our take

Mitsuri is easy to underrate on a first watch because the series frames her with comedy. That framing is deliberate. The character is about being underestimated, and the story lets the audience make the same mistake the people in her past made. By the time she holds off an Upper Moon, the joke has turned around, and her warmth reads as a kind of courage rather than naivety.

A useful way to read her scenes is to watch how other characters respond to her. Those who dismiss her tend to be wrong about other things too, while those who take her seriously, like Tanjiro and Obanai, are the ones the story trusts. Gotouge uses her as a quiet test of judgment.
