AI tools, with the citation habit still on
Use these to draft, translate a paragraph, or try a model. Then open the page they claimed to summarize. A confident sentence is not a footnote.
Nothing on this page matches that.
Claude
Anthropic’s chat. Strong on long notes. It will still invent a page number if you let it.
ChatGPT
OpenAI’s chat. The default people mean when they say “ask the AI.” Check the sentence it sounds sure about.
Gemini
Google’s chat, wired to their account. Handy next to Docs. The same habit applies: it is a draft, not a citation.
Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft’s chat, including the one that sits in their office apps if you pay for that seat.
Perplexity
Answers with links under them. Open the links. A footnote is not the same as having read the page.
NotebookLM
Google’s notebook over sources you upload. Useful when the pile is your own files. It can still misread a PDF.
Google AI Studio
The place to try Gemini models with a prompt and a key, before you bury the call in an app.
Hugging Face
Models, datasets, and demos, with a license on the model card if the uploader filled it in.
Ollama
Runs open-weight models on your machine. The model’s license is not Ollama’s license. Read both.
LM Studio
A desktop app for local models, with a chat window for people who do not want a terminal first.
Cursor
An editor that writes with the repo open. It is still your commit. Read the diff.
GitHub Copilot
Completions inside GitHub’s editors. Suggestions can repeat code you would not have licensed. Glance before you accept.
Le Chat
Mistral’s own chat. A European vendor, a different default than the three everyone names first.
DeepL
A translator that is often closer on European languages than a general chat. It is still a machine. Keep the original.
Adobe Firefly
Adobe’s image model, trained for their commercial-use pitch. Generated pictures still need a human to decide if they belong.
Midjourney
Images from a prompt, on a paid plan. Their terms decide what you may sell. A pretty picture is not a release from those terms.
Anthropic docs
The API reference, not the chat. When a blog paraphrases a parameter, this is the page that names it.
OpenAI
The company site and the door to the API docs. Product names move. The docs move with them.
